Windows Live Messenger is a great messenger, I use it. I never suggest installing additional items such as toolbars, so make sure you check at every question to make sure you only install the software you really want.

I have not spent much time with windows live onecare other than a short trial during its beta stage. I would suggest using Avast antivirus instead of onecare as it is free, and works very well.
